Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a condition that results in recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region. Because the most prevalent symptom of IC is bladder pain, it is often referred to as painful bladder syndrome (PBS).
Evaluating Your Condition
WHAT CAUSES INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS RELATED PAIN?
Cystoscopy (visualization of the bladder with an endoscopic camera) often shows chronic inflammation of the bladder, often with pinpoint bleeding or small ulcerations. There is a high correlation of patients with interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia, leading some researchers to believe that IC is part of a larger, systemic inflammatory disease process. Pain may change in intensity as the bladder fills with urine or as it empties. Women’s symptoms often get worse during menstruation. They may sometimes experience pain during vaginal intercourse
